How I Made A Successful Career Switch

Career Switch

In life, with growth comes decisions, and decisions are baby steps to an overall goal. Have you ever been in a position where you’re uncertain about a decision to make? What career path to take? I feel we’ve all felt that way. Don’t feel alone, it happens to everyone.

So a little flashback, I always wanted to be a lawyer, but apparently, the universe knew it wasn’t for me (I like to see this as a blessing in disguise). I graduated from school scared and hungry for success. I was scared because I did not know what exactly I wanted to do or where I wanted to work. I felt like a moving ship without a direction, I was clueless not knowing the job role to apply for. I would think every day and wonder why I even studied political science. But guess what? I kept moving on with life regardless, some people call it “going with the flow”. I got my first job from a career fair I attended.

In this career fair, I got interviewed by different companies, not knowing which would select me or what exactly I would be doing. I remember being asked by the HR of the company that selected me what role I wanted, I randomly chose Human Resource. I got a direction from this but I knew that was not what I wanted to do. One thing I did was learn through the process of each job I got during my discovery stage. I like to call this the discovery stage because I was not fully aware of what I wanted to do. It’s okay to be in the discovery stage for a while, sometimes I feel I still am.

I am currently a Content and Digital Marketing Strategist. Did I know I wanted to do this in one day? No, it took a while, all along I was on a journey to discovering my path. In doing this, I found out that some people who studied professional courses still did not know what they wanted to do in life. They probably have an interest in photography, music, design, etc. and are thinking of how to switch.

Life is a journey, and every process, I mean every process, even your failures, are part of your journey in discovering yourself and what you are called for. I have realized that God always finds a way to put us in places where we would excel and succeed.Even when we feel like we lack direction or we don’t know what we want to do, I’m pretty sure God is like “why are you even bothered?” It’s okay to switch career paths, it’s okay to not practice what you studied in school. It’s okay to pursue that dream and start that business you always wanted to. You will fail in the process, don’t be discouraged but brace up. One of my favorite quotes says “when you believe in yourself you will realize that failure is not an option” I believe that failure is falling down and getting up every time you fall, you have to get up, even when you’re down or you feel like you don’t have a place in life.

So yes, I flipped the career switch and I’m doing okay. If your heart is telling you something, do it! Ask God to lead you (very important), and please start it, learn it so much that you become a master at it (I’m currently in my learning stage). If you thought you discovered your career path but you no longer enjoy what you do, and you want to switch to something else, then switch with a plan. Sometimes quitting is the best plan when it’s done right and for the right reasons.

P.S: Quitting doesn’t mean you failed.
